Lenses.

I’m going to try to answer more of your questions here on the blog.. so here we go.

The Question: What lenses do you primarily use?
The Answer: The 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.2 and 85mm 1.2.
These are all fantastic. I would say the 50mm stays on my camera 75% of the time. Here is a shot with the 50mm.

Post other questions here and I will try to get to them. Enjoy the day!

oh my gosh.. 1.2’s and 1.4’s.. hhaha one day…

    Gotta love that 1.2

Thanks for being open to talk gear a little bit. A little more explanation would be nice. For instance on this post you talk about 3 fast prime lenses. Maybe talk about why you prefer primes instead of zooms, and why you like the 50mm specifically. I can guess why, but I’m totally interested to hear about your thinking behind your gear selections.

Here’s a topic suggestion for a possible future post: I’ve noticed that you compose many of your images intentionally backlit. What are the elements of such images that are particularly appealing to you? Maybe a few tips for correctly metering and composing such shots? Post-production addition of flares, etc?

Bryan, great questions. The reason why I use prime lenses (fixed length) rather than zooms is because I can get a sharper image. Zoom lenses have a lot of moving parts so it makes sense why it would be less sharp. The 50mm is considered “normal”.. its not wide and not telephoto. I like this because its a focal length that feels real. Also, at 50mm I am pretty flexible to frame something close and further away simply by taking a couple steps. I use the 35mm a lot when I am shooting more of a story. Its great to tell a little bit more of the story. The 35mm is always with me as well. It really depends on my mood that day ;)

you have been doing alot of the film. what would you recommend for someone wanting to get into the toy camera film stuff. what kind to start with, camera, film types, equipment, places to develop.. etc thanks so much maybe a video tutorial k maybe to much or not. would be kind of cool.. :)

  6. Mike says:

Isn’t the 50mm what the human sees in?

  7. Trever says:

yes Mike, “they” say that we see similar to a 50mm.. which is why it feels so real and why they call it a “normal” focal length.

hey trever. i like “bryan”s suggestion about backlighting tips. i would love to hear more on this topic or maybe even a future post on this subject alone?

  9. Amanda says:

I’m with Brian & another Brian. Your work is stunning. I’m interested in your backlighting, but also in your processing. Such vivid colors, but natural at the same time. I know before you have said on your blog that you use the curves channels. Do you have any suggestions to develop a photo in photoshop with the vivid intensity of the colors you do so well?
